How do I get into veterinary obstetrics?

I'm going to a community college to get an AA in either veterinary technology or Pre-Vet, Ideally I would like to go onto Veterinary Obstetrics and Gynecology, but I'm not sure how to go about it. Can anyone help me out?

  1. First of all, they don't call it obstetrics and gynecology in veterinary medicine. It's called theriogenology. It's concerned with reproductive medicine and mostly deals with artificial insemination. And it's mostly large animal oriented. For the most part, once they're inseminated they have the babies on their own and don't really need a vet unless there's a problem. If you want to go to tech school, it's a two year program offered by some community colleges. Make sure to pick one that's accredited by the AVMA. But, I'm not sure how involved technicians are with theriogenology. If you want to go to vet school, you can take some classes at a community college, but you'd have to transfer to a four year university for your upper level science pre-requisites. There are only 28 vet schools in the US and admittance is very competitive. Every vet school has a different set of requirements by they add up to about 70 credit hours. They're going to be a lot of chemistry, biology and physics. After you complete those if you apply and are accepted to vet school, that's four years long. I suggest finding a vet to work for or shadow and seeing what it's like. Talk to them about opportunities in theriogenology and what you'd actually be doing. You also need a recommendation from a vet for vet school. If you're still interested in this, a lot of places offer AI certification. This can look good on a vet school application.
